Sports Desk Chattogram Challengers earned their second win in the ongoing Bangabandhu Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) beating Rangpur Rangers by six wickets at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur on Saturday. Sent into bat first Rangpur Rangers scored 157 runs for eight in 20 overs, riding on 78 runs off 54 by Mohammad Naim. Rangers scored 25 runs in 3.1 overs in the opening stand before Kesrick Williams took the first wicket of Mohammad Shahzadm, who fell for run a ball nine hitting with one four. After the dismissal of Shahzad, Tom Abell and Jahurul Islam fell in quick succession, but Mohammad Naim was confident in his end and continued to keep the scoreboard afloat. Rangers’ captain Mohammad Nabi scored the team 2nd highest 21 runs off just 12 with one four and one six. Naim, who was looking so comfortable in the middle, was removed by Rubel Hossain scoring 78 runs off 54 featuring six fours and three sixes to guide the team to a fighting total of 157 for eight in 20 overs. Besides, tail-ender Taskin Ahmed quick-fired four-ball 11 runs with six, L Gregory made 13-ball 11 runs while one down TB Abell scored nine-ball 10 runs hitting one boundary. Kesrick bagged two wickets conceding 35 runs in four overs while Mehedi Hasan Rana, Rubel Hossain, Ryan Burl and Mahmudllah Riyad took one wicket each. In reply, Challengers chased the total scoring match-winner 158 for 4 in 18.2 overs with the help of 33-ball fifty by opener Chadwick Walton. Chadwick and Avishka Fernando scored 68 runs 7.1 overs in the opening stand to make things easier to for Chattigram to seal their 2nd win in the 3rd match. Chadwick scored 50 off just 34 ball hitting four fours and three sixes, Fernando added 37 runs off 23 with two fours and three sixes while one down Imrul Kayes contributed 44 runs off 33 deliveries featuring three fours and two sixes. Lewis Gregory took two wickets conceding 27 runs while Mohammad Nabi and Tob Abell bagged one wicket each. Challengers will play their next match against Sylhet Thunder on Tuesday (December 17) at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram while Rangers will take on Cumilla Warriors on Wednesday (December 18) at the same venue. Earlier on Friday at the same venue, hitting 42 off 17 balls and scalping five wickets, Thisara Perera helped Dhaka Platoon register their maiden victory against Cumilla Warriors by 20 runs. Platoon set a challenging target of 181 runs while batting first after losing the toss. In reply, Warriors scored 160 for nine in 20 overs. While chasing, Warriors scored 32 runs in 2.5 overs riding on the fiery batting of Bhanuka Rajapaksa. But, Platoon captain Mashrafe Bin Mortaza removed Rajapaksa for 29 off 12 balls, and Platoon came back strongly in the game. After Rajapaksa, Yasir Ali fell for three off six balls. However, Soumya Sarkar hit 35 off 26 with five fours and one six to keep the Warriors afloat. After Soumya, Sabbir Rahman and Dasun Shanaka fell in quick succession and Warriors lost the momentum. Dawid Malan (40 off 36) and Mahidul Islam Ankon (37 off 27) contributed well with the bat. Perera took five wickets conceding 30 runs in four overs while Wahab Riaz bagged two wickets. Earlier, Platoon posted 180 despite losing their first wicket in the very first ball of the game when Anamul Haque Bijoy fell prey to Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Platoon lost their second wicket in 26 runs. But Tamim Iqbal and Lawrie Evans added 75 runs in the third wicket stand which guided them to a big total. Evans fell for 23 off 24 with two fours while Tamim posted 74 off 53 with six fours and four sixes. Along with Tamim, Sri Lankan all-rounder Perera also fired a 17-ball 42 with seven fours and one six to propel Platoon to a challenging total of 180 for seven in 20 overs. Dasun Shanaka and Soumya Sarkar bagged two wickets each conceding 48 and 39 runs respectively while Mujeeb and Abu Hider Rony took one wicket each. Earlier, Dhaka Platoon earned their first win in the BBPL Twenty20, riding on a fine 74 from Tamim Iqbal, as they beat Cumilla Warriors by 20 runs at the same venue Cricket Stadium in the city on Friday night. Dhaka, who were beaten by Rajshahi Royals in their opening game, posted a challenging 180 losing seven wickets in their stipulated 20 overs. Tamim led the way with his knock, off 53 balls, including half a dozen fours and four eye-catching sixes, while Thisara Perera hammered an unbeaten 17-ball 42, with seven boundaries. Cumilla captain Dasun Shanaka and Soumya Sarkar bagged two wickets apiece. In reply, Cumilla were restricted to 160 for the loss of nine wickets in their allotted 20 overs, despite valiant knocks from Dawid Malan (40), Mahidul Islam Ankon (37), Soumya Sarkar (35) and Bhanuka Rajapaksa (29). Cumilla put up a right good fight but wickets at regular intervals meant they couldn’t really drive in the momentum. Player of the match Perera put in an all-round display, bagging five wickets conceding 30 runs in his quota of four overs. Perera is in fact on a hat-trick, and will get the opportunity to bag a treble when Dhaka next take the field. The Sri Lankan had also been on a hat-trick earlier in the game but Ankon negotiated the delivery without fuss.
