Intellectuals killed to cripple nation: Nasir

Chattogram Bureau CCC Mayor AJM Nasiruddin on Saturday said sensing their imminent defeat the Pakistani occupation forces and their local collaborators tried to cripple the nation intellectually by killing intellectuals. He was speaking as the chief guest at a discussion organized on the occasion of Martyred Intellectuals Day in the port city. "The country lost many of its brightest sons and daughters this day. Renowned academics, doctors, engineers, journalists, teachers and other eminent personalities were dragged out of their homes, blindfolded, taken to unknown places and then brutally tortured to death. The bloodbath consummated with the killing of the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahamn in 1975" he said. However, most of the killings took place on December 14, 1971 while, on December 16, 1971, the country achieved victory at a cost of 30 Lac martyrs and chastity of 3 Lac women, he added. CCC councilor Mohammed Zahurul Alam Jashim, Alhaj Mohammed Hiron, CEO Md. Shamsudduha and secretary Mohammed Abu Shahed Chowdhury were among others present on the occasion. Earlier the mayor and councilors paid tributes to the martyrs by placing wreaths at the Memorial in city's Pahartali graveyard. People from all walks of life also placed wreaths at the memorial.
