Jute harvest gets momentum

Farhana Begum NARSINGDI, Aug 28: Harvesting of jute in all the six upazilas of the district has gained momentum as a result of the recent adequate rainfalls Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said the farmers are now busy in separating fibers with much enthusiasm for getting lucrative prices of jute this season.† Newly harvesting jute have started coming to the local markets. The farmers are happy with the prevailing price of jute. The newly harvesting jute is being sold† at Tk 1000 to Tk 1300 per mound (40 kg) depending on their varieties and qualities. The market is† flooded with new jute within one month. During the current season the farmers brought 3200 hectares of land under jute cultivation in current season. Lote Bapary, a local farmer of Shokandi Union in Momohardi, told The News Today correspondent that adequate rainfall in the last couple of weeks helped the farmers harvesting their jute timely. Besides, the farmers are hopeful of completing the transplantation of Aman seeding by the scheduled time.
