Our Correspondent GAZIPUR, August 28: Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader on Monday said leave of the officials of Road Transport and Highways Division (RHD) has been cancelled to ensure smooth journey for the home-bound people during the holy Eid-ul-Azha. "We will keep the highways useable and passable by any means for the home-bound people during the Eid... And this is our decision," he told reporters while visiting Chandra Trimor area in Kaliakoir to see the traffic condition. Highway Police Deputy Inspector General Md Atiqul Islam, Roads and Highways Additional Chief Engineer Abdus Sabur, Superintend Engineer Md Sabuj Uddin Khan, Police Super Md Harun-ur-Rashid, among others, accompanied the minister. Quader said, "We have already talked with police, district administrations, upazila administrations, transport owners and workers to this end." He said the country's highways would be kept fit for smooth journey at any means during the Eid. "There is no reason to be scared of the journey during the Eid-ul-Azha. There was not much traffic gridlock in the last Eid-ul Fitr. Highways will be kept running during the Eid-ul Azha too," he said. The minister said, though the current flood caused some problems at different points, the highways are still mostly in good condition. Quader asked the authorities concerned to remain alert against extortion on the highways. The minister expressed his hope that the highways will remain free from traffic gridlock and the people will not face inconveniences during the Eid-ul-Azha.
