Biman to operate direct flights from Sylhet to London from October 4

Business Desk The Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB) has given permission to Biman Bangladesh Airlines to operate direct flights from Sylhet to London from October 4. The move came following Biman getting approval from the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT). CAAB Chairman Air Vice-Marshal Mafidur Rahman confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Thursday afternoon. The CAAB chief said: “We got permission to operate direct flights to London from October 4. The authority of the UK’s Department for Transport (DfT) has verbally informed CAAB on Thursday in this regard.” “Now the national flag carrier will be able to operate direct flights any time,” added the CAAB Chairman. Biman Managing Director (MD) and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mokabbir Hossain said: “We have a scheduled flight to London on October 4. New flight schedules will be disclosed after receiving direction from the government.” On September 16, a virtual meeting was held between CAAB and UK’s DfT to finalize the direct flights on the Sylhet-London- Sylhet route. In the meeting, CAAB proposed to DfT about resumption of direct flights on the Sylhet-London route while appraising the UK team regarding the steps, and preparations taken by the Bangladeshi aviation authority to curb the spread of Covid-19, the CAAB chairman added. The meeting was attended by Kashif Chaudry, a director of UK’s DfT, and he agreed to the proposals made by CAAB and further discussed other bilateral issues. Earlier in August this year, Biman MD and CEO Mokabbir Hossain told Dhaka Tribune that they are waiting for the Covid-19 situation to become normal to operate direct flights on the London-Sylhet-London route. It will not be commercially viable for Biman to operate flights on this route during the pandemic, he said. However, earlier this year, a team of UK’s DfT was supposed to visit the Sylhet airport for an overall inspection. But the team could not come due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic which had halted the efforts of resuming direct flights to London from Sylhet.
