Corona sample tests hampered at CU lab

Chattogram Bureau: CHATTOGRAM, June 30: Lack of adequate test kits and samples allegedly hamper corona sample tests at the laboratory of Chittagong University (CU) , according to concerned sources. Despite having the capacity to test 500 samples, the laboratory receives samples not exceeding 100 to 150 a day as sent by Health Administration for which it can't function in full swing, they said. BITID and CMCH laboratories have less work forces than those of CU for which test results are obtained after a longer period of time, CU insiders observed. If the samples waiting to be tested at these two facilities would have been sent to CU lab, the test results could have been available much earlier, they claimed. CU sources further said, the university lab consists of three teams each comprising three teachers and tweleve students and the biology faculty with the departments of microbiology, bio-chemistry , molecular biology and genetic engineering regularly conduct teaching and research on the topics. " Our lab has the capacity to test as many as 500 samples a day whereas we receive only 100 to 150 samples from only six places and we provide the test results on daily basis", Prof. Dr. Monirul Islam, head of the laboratory told this correspondent. A coordinated test plan designed byconcerned health administrators including civil surgeon of Chittagong could help us conduct tests as per our capability, he added. While contacted, civil surgeon Fazle Rabbi said, the prime obstacle is lack of requisite number of kits. "Once we get adequate supply of kits, the problem can be solved", he informed as he also suggested of a coordination committee that will monitor the overall procedure. Moreover, sample collection will be reduced for the next few days in a bid to reduce sample load in Chittagong, he said.
