Revelries ring in spring

News Report: People joined the revelries in celebrations of Pohela Falgun and Valentine's Day togather, to leave a message to all that love, affection, respect and commitment should be cornerstones of removing all ills and building Bangladesh. People celebrated Pahela Falgun, the first day of Spring in the Bangla calendar, with the glee of Valentine's Day. The capital Dhaka and other major cities of the country are ablaze on Friday with mirth and merriment as curious youngsters wear yellow and red dresses, flower-made ornaments and attended traditional musical functions. Bangladesh Flower Society (BFS) general secretary Emamul Hossain said flower worth at least Tk 80 crore was sold on the Valentine's Day and Pahela Falgun. However, Amar Ekushey Boi Mela fairgrounds on Friday were bustling with visitors clad in traditional yellow sari and Panjabi, showcasing the arrival of spring. Though girls wear 'Basanti' [yellow or orange] saris and floral ornaments while boys clothe themselves in colourful panjabis to welcome the arrival of spring on the day, this year this day is being covered with red, blue, yellow altogether. City markets were seen overcrowded with customers buying colourful panjabis and saris and other traditional dresses ahead of the festival. Jatiya Boshonto Utshab Udjapan Parishad arranged the main program of the day. The platform is arranging different programs including rendering songs and recitation of poems except regular programs. Clad in yellow attires with branches of flowers in the hair bun and hands, hundreds of young girls and boys thronged the Bakultala on the premises of Fine Arts Faculty at Dhaka University (DU), the centre point of the festival to celebrate spring, to sing songs, recite poems and dance. Ramna Park, Rabindra Sarobar and Hatirjheel drew a huge crowd on the day. The entire DU campus including Teacher-Student Centre (TSC), Arts Faculty, Curzon Hall, University Mall (Mall Chattar) and the compound of Amar Ekushey Granthamela turned into the best place to hang out with friends, family members and beloved ones on the day.
