New waste management system introduced

News Report Dhaka is now considered as one of the most polluting cities in the world. Around 7690 tonnes of solid waste (MSW) is generated daily from six major cities, of which Dhaka constitutes 69 per cent of generated MSW. More importantly, 40-60 per cent of wastes are not collected and managed properly. These wastes end up in streets, waterbodies and surrounding rivers of the capital. With an aim to improve the situation, Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) in collaboration with Featuring Green Earth has introduced a unique waste management system in Malek Member area, Khilgaon, Dhaka, through "'Khilgaon Earth Club". The inauguration ceremony of the programme was held recently at Khilgaon. Zonal Executive Officer of DSCC, S M Ansaruzzaman graced the occasion as the chief guest. Newly-elected Ward Councillor Md Mahbubul Alam (ward 1, DSCC) and reserved female Ward Councillor Farhana Islam Doli (ward 1, 11, 12 of DSCC) were present as special guests. While inaugurating the programme S M Ansaruzzaman said, "the government has been working on climate change and helping all to take such projects. Such program will help address health related issues in low-income community." Social welfare officers, waste management officers, Community Development Forum (CDF) members, community people, Dr. Mahabubul Alam - Head of Programmes (PSTC); Manik Kumar Saha - Project Manager of Featuring Green Earth and other project personnel, among others, were also present at the ceremony. Under the initiative, around 500-600 households of Malek Member area will receive a waste van and waste drum (perishable and non-perishable). Each household will pay a monthly amount of the 20-30 to the waste management committee to meet up the operational cost of collecting waste at household level and transporting back to the DSCC secondary transfer station. In near future, the initiative will look forward to develop the recycling/reusing facilities to complete the full waste cycle in collaboration with Dhaka South City Corporation. Plan International Bangladesh along with Population Services and Training Centre (PSTC) and Bangladesh Youth Environmental Initiative (BYEI) is implementing Featuring Green Earth.
