Business establishments generate jobs for 30,000 people in Rajshahi

RAJSHAHI, Feb 13: Business establishments have generated employment scopes for more than 30,000 people in all eight districts under Rajshahi division during the last five years till June last. Officials concerned said the people got the jobs in various fields like enterprise development, skill development and training, industry ownership transfer and establishment of new industries. Investment to the industrial sector has gradually been increasing in the region contributes to the field of its employment generation. AKM Benjamin Riazi, Divisional Director of Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA) said 372 industries were given registration with investment of around Taka 52,140.86 million in the division. Among other established industries, 262 auto-rice mills, 114 fish and poultry feed mills and a four-star hotel are significant, reports BSS. Another 75 industries are now on the implementation stage with financial investment of around Taka 550 crore. Upon successful implementation of those, employment opportunities for 3,500 people are expected to be created there, he added. Riazi said an initiative has been taken to create 3,000 new and skilled entrepreneurs in the division within two years in line with one of the prime minister's 10 initiatives -'Investment Development'. "We have set a target to build 100 powerful women entrepreneurs in the city this year to mark the celebration of Mujib Barsho 2020, birth centenary of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman", he added. BIDA under its 'Entrepreneurship and Skill Development Project (ESDP)' has started providing training to the interested youths to create entrepreneurs both male and female for accelerating economic progress in the region as the country as well. President of Rajshahi Chamber of Commerce and Industries Md Muniruzzaman told BSS that the number of new industries will increase furthermore if requisite facilities are ensured. Referring to enormous prospects of setting up of agro-based industries here the chamber leader said need-based steps should be taken in this regard as early as possible. Building economic zone has become the demand of time. He called for bringing all the existing potential sectors in Rajshahi under budgetary allocation for its overall development. The chamber leader said immediate steps should be taken to re-launch the now partially-functioning Rajshahi Silk Factory for the sake of revitalizing the silk sector. He identically said two major tourism-enriched cities- Chattogram and Cox's Bazar are detached from Rajshahi in terms of direct rail and air communications. This odd situation must be removed. There is an urgent need for direct railway connection between Rajshahi and Chattogram and Mongla seaports. President of Bangladesh Silk Industries Owners Association Liakat Ali said if the Rajshahi Airport was upgraded to international standard, various agro-products could be exported to various foreign countries including the Middle East from here directly. Thereby, regional economy will be bolstered. If we bring back navigability in Padma River through capital dredging the river will be the turning point for Rajshahi's development, he added. Reviewing the existing problems with regard to setting up local enterprises and possible solutions to those, he sought the cooperation of all the authorities concerned for flourishing industrial sector. He dwelt on various issues like trade and business, industry, agriculture, power supply, import and export, SME development and expansion and bank interest rate. Highlighting the enormous potential of the silk along with establishing agro-processing industry, he said the business promotion organisations could extend financial and technical support to this sector for proper utilisation of the agro- products.
