Illegal sand lifting from Arial Khan continues

Our Correspondent: MADARIPUR, Feb 13: Sand is being lifted illegally from the Arial Khan River in Shibchar, Kalkini and Sadar upazilas. As a result, the river may erode those areas anytime. On the other hand, the lifted sand is being sold though local administration conducted mobile courts at different times and convicted and jailed sand businessmen. Local alleged that some influential people have been lifting sand illegally by installing dredger machine on the river's southern part near Asmot Ali Khan Bridge to Alinagar in Kalkini Upazila for long. Though the district administration did not lease any of the sand quarries, the illegal sand lifting is going on, posing a serious threat of erosion across a vast area beside the Arial Khan and the Padma rivers. Some local people, Tota Bepari, Malek Akanda and Kalai Khan, said local Juba League leaders Rubel Khan, Sohel Khan and Moazzem Mollah are lifting sand by installing dredger machine. Sobahan Sarder, general secretary of Awami League in Jhaudi Union unit under Sadar Upazila was chopped and injured as he protested the illegal sand lifting. While asked, Rubel Khan and Sohel Khan said, "We are not lifting sand from the Arial Khan River due to resistance by local administration. Perhaps, other persons are lifting sand from the river." When contacted, Saifuddin Gias, Sadar Upazila nirbahi officer, said he does not know whether any complaint has been lodged in this connection. He, however, assured of taking steps after investigating the matter soon.
