Villages separated for lack of bridge in Gazipur

Our Correspondent GAZIPUR, Nov 21: A branch canal of the Shaldaha River has kept separated several villages of Gazipur Union under Sreepur Upazila in Gazipur District and of Bohuria Union under Sakhipur Upazila of Tangail District. In absence of any bridge on the canal, thousands of people of the adjacent villages cannot commute easily. But sadly no such visible action has been taken over the years to resolve the problem of the villages, locals said. According to local people, one government road crossing the Banshabari village on Sreepur Upazila up to Damer Pool has connected Sakhipur Upazila road via Kalomegha village in the upazila of Tangail District. As a matter of fact, a canal has separated the villages and as such the people have to cross extra 20-kilometre areas for communicating with different destinations. Veteran villager of Banshbari Village Hasan Ali said, "People of Sreepur Upazila in Gazipur and of Sakhipur Upazila in Tangail are related with one another in many ways. But, we are directly disconnected for lack of a bridge on the canal. Thus, the people of the two upazilas have to cross 20-km extra distance for various purposes." Housewife Husne Ara of Kalomegha Village in Sakhipur Upazila said her three daughters work in a garments factory in Sreepur. They have to go to the factory in a company bus which starts from Banshbari Bazaar. During dry season, they get in the bus by walking 3-km distance but in rainy season, they have to go to Banshbari Bazaar crossing 8-km distance. Farmer Mofiz Uddin of the same village said, "For lack of a bridge, no transport system has developed in our area. So, we have to walk distances for different purposes. If a permanent bridge is built, our plight will reduce." Member of No. 2 Ward under Gazipur Union Saiful Islam Bacchu said absence of a bridge is hindering the overall progress of several villages in the two upazilas. If a bridge is built, the lifestyle of villagers will improve, he pointed out. Chairman of Bohuria Union Parishad (UP) under Sakhipur Upazila Golam Kibria said the Shaldaha Canal is the hindrance to the development of the villages. If a permanent bridge is built on the canal at Damer Pool area, the communication of the villages will improve. Acting Chairman of Gazipur UP Mizanur Rahman said they have submitted an application to upazila project implementation officer (UPIO) demanding a bridge on the canal. In this connection, UPIO ASM Muhit Ul Islam said steps have already been taken to build a bridge on the canal. The work will start as and when the water flow becomes normal in next December.
