Diarrhoea breaks out in Sirajganj

Our Correspondent SIRAJGANJ, Nov 21: People are thronging local hospitals as diarrhoea has hit people in the last few days. Meanwhile, the number patients is rising gradually. Besides crowding at upazila health complexes, many patients are gathering at Sirajganj 250-Bed General Hospital for better treatment. Due to lack of sufficient beds, many patients are taking treatment staying on the hospital's floor while many are going to different private hospitals. The doctors said the situation will be normal in the next few days. While visiting Sirajganj General Hospital on Thursday last, the number of diarrhoea patients was found to increase. About 30 to 35 patients are getting admitted to the hospital daily while at least 50 patients have been given first aid. People of all ages are being infected with the disease. The hospital sources said there would no crisis of medicines though the number of patients may increase. Md Mushfiqur Rahman of Dhanbandhi Mahalla of Sirajganj Municipality is taking treatment at the first floor of the hospital's new building. He said he took treatment at home after being infected three days back but as the situation worsened, he got admitted to the hospital on Wednesday last. Shahida Khatun, wife of Joynal of Ghargram Village in Tarash Upazila, said she got admitted on Sunday last and now the condition is a bit good. After she was suddenly affected with diarrhoea and vomiting on Friday last, she took treatment at home. But due to worsening of situation, she got admitted to Tarash Upazila Health Complex and from there got admitted to Sirajganj General Hospital. Resident Medical Officer of the hospital Dr Faridul Islam said the diarrhoea has not become so serious as per a survey. Some patients are admitted to the hospital with the disease every year. But, now the number is increasing. He also said though many patients have been given primary treatment, about 150 patients have been admitted to the hospital in last four days. The admitted patients are being given improved treatment and saline. He added that the disease is increasing due to unconsciousness. He advised all to be more cautious. Superviser of Sirajganj General Hospital Dr Ramesh Chandra Saha said diarrhoea infection has increased due to contamination in food and water and for last few days' heat. He said that due to bed shortage, many patients are being treated on hospital's floor. They have adequate medicines and people need not be panicked in this connection, he added.
