Our Correspondent GAZIPUR, Oct 14: Panic caused by leech attack has gripped people of Potka, Bauni and Karnapur Villages under Gosinga Union in Sreepur Upazila of the district. Leech attacks people whenever they are going outside. As a result, their daily life is being hampered. They are not getting any solution to the problem though it has been going on for the last few months. Selina Akhter of Bauni Village said, "This problem is new to us. The inundated areas are generally prone to this problem; we are facing it for the first time. Though people are cautious about the leech attack, the domestic animals are being affected." Farmer Saidul Haque of Potka Village said, "We can't work in the fields for leech attack. Though we can resist it on us, we can't protect our domestic animals from this." Veterinary doctor of Karnapur Village Abdus Sattar said not only in the fields, the leech attacks anybody walking by the roads. The children remain in fear in this connection. The leech attack in domestic animals causes a kind of sore on their skin. A school teacher Tania Akhter said children are suffering much for leech attack. They can't play in the field. Many guardians don't let their children out for this. Gosinga Union Parishad Chairman Shahjahan Sarker said, "The leech attack has broken out not only in the three villages, but in the whole union, which has been going on for the last six months. Many people can't work in the field for fear of leech. The attack on domestic animals has increased our worries. We are advising all to keep their surroundings clean. The government is yet to take any steps in this connection." Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Mahmudul Haque said leech is a blood-sucking animal. Due to carelessness, it sometimes enters human body and causes serious harm. Leech attack can cause anaemia in humans. Public awareness should be created in this connection.
