Bonu, the wave maker

Kittu never did the things she was supposed to do. It was driving her mother up the wall. And, then she got herself a pet...a little pup! Amma had a problem with her nine-year-old daughter, Kamakshi, a.k.a. Kittu. The girl never did things which she was normally supposed to do. For example, Kittu never woke up on time. Amma would, despite her busy morning schedule, rush to Kittu's bedroom at least five times to wake her up. And finally, when Kittu wakes up, there would be little time left to get ready. She would conveniently blame Amma saying, "Why did you wake me up so late?" No! No! No! Then, Kittu hated baths. "Why should I bathe everyday. Isn't it only yesterday I took one?" she would justify. Kittu even disliked Ponnamma, the woman who took care of her when Amma slogged in the office. "Amma, when I was playing on the laptop, I got such a shock when I casually turned back. She was looming large, as if to swoop down on me. " And, Kittu disliked homework. "Why should they give homework everyday? she asked while giving her school diary to Amma for her signature. "Miss wants an assurance from the parent that I'll do my homework regularly," said Kittu, pointing at the space where Amma signed. Then she added, "I want a cute puppy." "Why?" asked Amma. "So that you can give a dumb excuse that your dog chewed your homework?" But then, Kittu was Amma's darling. So, a cute pup was bought, after Ponnamma agreed to take care of it in Amma's absence. Kittu found that the pup was exactly like her. Bonu, as Kittu called the pup, hated baths. It liked cosying up in Kittu's bed though he had a separate place to sleep. When Kittu played games on the laptop, Bonu encouraged her by letting out little squeals of joy. And, Bonu chewed up anything that he found in the house. Amma was disturbed. She planned for immediate damage control! So, she began waking up early and taking Bonu for a walk. Surprisingly, Bonu loved these walks and tugged at Kittu's bedsheet until the girl woke up and accompanied them. Amma tried bathing Bonu, every morning. Though, initially he didn't like it, he grew to enjoy the daily bath. Now, can Kittu be far behind? She too began bathing regularly. Bonu chewed up many things but never chewed or tore Kittu's homework. Instead, he would drag Kittu's bag to her table and fetch little things like colour pencils and ruler whenever she asked for them. With Bonu around, Kittu began enjoying the long drives in Amma's car, some evenings. Kittu, usually played games on her tab while in the car. But, seeing how Bonu would press its face against the window and watch the lovely scenery as Amma drove along, she too began to look outside and enjoy the countryside. "Thanks Bonu," said Amma, one day, while hugging the pup. 'because of you, Kittu has changed. She even likes Ponnamma now!"
