Mobile court attacked

News Desk: A group of miscreants attacked a mobile court of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA) during an eviction drive at Postogola along the Buriganga riverbank on Thursday, leaving an executive magistrate and four members of the team injured.
The BIWTA team, led by an executive magistrate, launched the drive in the morning as part of the ongoing river-reclamation crusade across the country.
''At one stage, when the team tried to evict a sand quarry, a group of people equipped with bamboo sticks swooped on the team, leaving five people, including executive magistrate Mostafizur Rahman, injured,'' said BIWTA Dhaka River Port Joint Director AKM Arif Uddin.
Later, a team of police went to the spot and arrested one named Bappi while the others managed to flee the scene, he said.
The drive continued till 5 pm.
Meanwhile, the BIWTA demolished 169 illegal establishments in Charmirerbag, Shashanghat, Nabachar and Kholamura areas in the last two days.
The drive was part of the government's efforts to free the Buriganga from illegal encroachment.
BIWTA Dhaka River Port Joint Director AKM Arif Uddin said they also got Tk 15,00,000 from auction of illegal construction materials.
On Wednesday, they evicted more than 119 illegal establishments and on Tuesday 50 illegal structures, including two seven-story buildings, in Nababchar and Kholamura areas.
''All the illegal establishments will be gradually evicted to free the river,'' he said. (Inputs taken from UNB)
