Price fall in large-cap drives stocks down

News Report Stock markets have continued to bleed as they ended in down-trend on Wednesday mainly due to price fall in large-cap securities. The falling major sectors were IT, engineering and financial institutions. A total of 135 securities of the large-cap group moved down due to lower activities. The broader DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed the day with 21.88 points down at 5,196.03. The Shariah based DSES and the blue-chip DS30 also followed the same trend with 9.15 points down at 1,194.22 and with 12.70 points down at 1,812.82. The daily trade rose to 9.28 crore shares from Tuesday’s 8.48 crore shares and the day’s trade value at DSE increased to Tk 256.28 crore from Tk 251.36 crore of the previous session. At DSE, out of the day’s 341 securities, prices of 103 securities closed higher against 173 losing issues. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the day of the week with downward trend with its major CASPI 50.29 points down at 15,912. At CSE, 206 issues were traded. Of those, 69 closed higher and 105 closed lower when 53.81 lakh shares worth Tk 11.71 crore changed hands. Earlier, stocks kept on losing ground on Tuesday with daily trade turnover on the prime bourse Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) dipped to 14-month low as investors were mostly reluctant to make fresh investment in stocks. Turnover, a crucial indicator of the market, stood at Tk 2.511 billion on the country’s premier bourse, slumping further by 18 per cent over previous day’s mark of Tk 3.05 billion. The broader DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed the day with 29.91 points down at 5,217.91. The blue-chip DS30 and the Shariah DSES also followed the same trend with 10.88 points down at 1,825.52 and with 7.00 points down at 1,203.37 respectively. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the day of the week with down with its major CASPI 93.07 points down at 15,962.29. At the CSE, a total of 223 issues were traded while 52 closed higher and 142 closed lower when 48.02 lakh shares worth Tk 14.55 crore changed hands. A total of 155 securities of the large-cap group moved down due to lower activities. The broader DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed the day with 26.10 points down at 5,247.83. The Shariah DSES and the blue-chip DS30 also followed the same trend with 8.65 points down at 1,210.37 and with 10.08 points down at 1,836.40. The daily trade fell to 10.45 crore shares from Sunday’s 12.69 crore shares and the day’s trade value at DSE decreased to Tk 305.03 crore from Tk 358.16 crore of the previous session. At DSE, out of the day’s 343 securities, prices of 87 securities closed higher against 211 losing issues. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the day in down-trend with its major CASPI 118.54 points down at 16,055.36. At CSE, 220 issues were traded. Of those, 54 closed higher and 147 closed lower when 68.42 lakh shares worth Tk 15.85 crore changed hands. Earlier, stocks slipped back into the red on Sunday, after a single-session break, as investors booked profits with cautious positioning. Analysts said the market finished nearly flat as a section of investors continued on selling binge while some others were busy rebalancing portfolio amid ongoing earnings declarations. The day’s trade value at Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) declined to Tk 358.16 crore from Thursday’s Tk 376.22 crore and the daily trade fell to 12.68 crore shares from 12.73 crore shares of the previous session. The broader DSEX index of Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) closed the day with 1.91 points down at 5,273.93. The blue-chip DS30 and the Shariah DSES also followed the same trend with 4.86 points down at 1,846.48 and with 1.29 points down at 1,219.02. At the DSE, prices of 153 securities out of the day’s 347 closed higher against 150 losing issues. The Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the day in down-trend with its major CASPI 12.64 points down at 16,173.91. At the CSE, a total of 227 issues were traded while 114 closed higher and 95 closed lower as 84.99 lakh shares worth Tk 22.86 crore changed hands. Stocks closed last week flat on Thursday with falling trends of all major price indices at Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) and slightly up-trend in the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE). The broader DSEX of the DSE finished the week with 10.92 points down at 5,275.83. The blue-chip DS30 and Shariah based DSES also followed the same trend with 19.23 points down at 1,851.35 and with 4.67 points down at 1,220.31 respectively. During the week, the daily average trade value increased by 25.60 percent to Tk 428.96 crore and the average trade volume rose by 46.20 percent to 12.71 crore shares. Out of the 353 issues traded on DSE, 152 gained against 179 losing issues. Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) closed the week up, with its major CASPI index ending 25.78 points higher at 16,186.55. Stock markets opened last week in a positive mood witnessing sharp gain on Sunday as optimistic investors showed their buying spree across the board amid positive expectation. At the end of the session, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 108 points or 2.04 per cent to settle at 5,394. Two other indices also ended higher. The DS30 index, comprising blue chips, advanced 31 points to finish at 1,901 and the DSE Shariah Index rose 15.63 points to close at 1,240. Turnover, another important indicator of the market, also crossed Tk 5.0 billion-mark after nearly two months and amounted to Tk 5.35 billion, which was 12.6 per cent higher than the previous day’s turnover of Tk 4.75 billion. The gainers took a strong lead over the losers as out of 345 issues traded, 292 advanced, 38 declined and 15 issues remained unchanged on the DSE trading floor. A total number of 147,668 trades were executed in the day’s trading session with trading volume of 156.60 million securities. The market capitalisation of the DSE also rose to Tk 3,961 billion on Sunday, from Tk 3,888 billion in the previous session. The port city bourse, Chittagong Stock Exchange, also ended higher with its CSE All Share Price Index – CASPI –soaring 342 points to settle at 16,503 and the Selective Categories Index - CSCX –jumping 205 points to finish at 9,988. Here too, the gainers beat losers, as 217 issues closed higher, 32 ended lower and 10 remained unchanged on the CSE trading floor.
