Death for rape

Demand voiced from mass civic demo in Dhaka, elsewhere

News Report People from all strata of society joined a human chain stretching from Bangabhaban to Ganobhaban in the capital on Saturday demanding exemplary punishment for rape and murder of women. In the programme, the civil-society members voiced their grave concern over the gruesome killing of Nusrat Jahan Rafi, a Feni madrasa student. The killing of Nusrat has put the state and society on the dock, said the civil society members who joined the human chain. All sorts of repression and brutalities against women must be stopped forthwith, they demanded. Organised mainly by the left political party, Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB), the human chain vows to protect the dignity of the women and continue protest against oppression. Protests against the arson attack on Nusrat also took place in different educational institutions in Dhaka including Eden Women College and Azimpur Girls College, Islamic University and elsewhere of the country. The students of Islamic University (IU) Eden College and Azimpur Girls School on Saturday demonstrated demanding exemplary punishment of the perpetrators who are behind the death of Nusrat Jahan Rafi. They urged the government to take immediate actions against the killers of Nusrat and threatened to continue their protest until their demands are met. Meanwhile, a total of 13 people were involved in the arson attack on Nusrat. "Among the 13 people, four people, including two girls, had the direct involvement in setting fire to Nusrat," said Bonoz Kumar Mazumder, DAG of Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI), while briefing reporters at its Dhanmondi headquarters. Seven people have so far been arrested in connection with Nusrat's murder while a PBI team is conducting a drive to arrest the remaining six, he said. PBI identified two reasons behind the attack-filing the case against principal Siraj-Ud-Doula over sexually harassing the girl and her refusal of love offer by an Awami League leader. Apart from filing the case, Nusrat turned down several times a love offer made by Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Sonagazi Senior Fazil Madrasa unit president of Chhatra League. Shahadat Hossain Shamim, Sonagazi Senior Fazil Madrasa unit Chhatra League president, was arrested from Muktagachha upazila in Mymensingh while Jabed Hossain, a student of the madrasa, was arrested from Rampur in Feni. A PBI team arrested Jabed, who is also the student of the madrasa, from Rampur area in Feni district town on Friday. Earlier, a PBI team arrested Nur Uddin from Mymensingh district on Friday and Moksud Alam, a councillor of Sonagazi Municipality and acting general secretary of Awami League's local unit, and also a member of the governing body of Sonagazi Senior Fazil Madrasa, from the capital on Thursday night. The accused people held a meeting at West Hostel of the madrasa for killing the girl on April 5 following their meeting with the madarsa principal in jail. On April 6, Nusrat was set afire at an examination centre allegedly by people loyal to the principal after he was arrested and subsequently suspended as she had accused him of sexually harassing her. NusratJahan lost her battle for life at Dhaka Medical College and Hospital on Wednesday night, five days after the incident.
