Couple, driver burn to death

Microbus explodes after collision with van on way to Ctg to receive expatriate son

Zahid Hasan Cumilla, Feb 12: A couple and their driver burn to death as a microbus carrying them exploded into flames after an accident on their way to Chattogram to receive their expatriate son Tuesday. Police and hospital sources said four others suffered serious burs in the accident that happened as the micro rammed into a covered van on Dhaka-Chattogram highway's Nizampur area in Mirsarai upazila in the morning. The deceased were identified as Abdur Rahman, 65, and his wife Kulsum Begum, 55, of village Komalpur in Cumilla and the microbus driver, Rubel, 35, of Noakhali. The injured are Abul Kalam, Mohammad Rashed Rony, Mohammad Malek and Rasel. Md Jashim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, said the Chattogram-bound microbus went afire when the covered van dragged it some distance around 07.00am. "The microbus might have caught fire after the gas cylinder of the microbus had exploded under the impact of the collision," says a spot account of the terrible tragedy, given by police and witnesses. On information, a firefighting team rushed in and recovered the three bodies from the microbus and rescued the injured. Media reports said the couple, along with the other members of the family, was going to the Chittagong airport to receive their son, Abdul Momin, coming home from abroad when the tragedy struck. People from far and near thronged their village as the bodies were brought home. "Oh Allah, take me too," Momin bemoaned over the bodies of his parents whom he couldn't see alive. The injured were rushed and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital's burn unit. Meanwhile, four other people were killed in two accidents in the capital's Jatrabari and Postagola areas till early in the night. In the wake of a series of fatal accidents in recent times, Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader regretted the situation and put blame on influences of certain quarters. "Road accidents really remain a matter of concern," Quader, also the ruling Awami League general secretary, told reporters on the day. UNB adds: A teacher of Khulna BL College was killed when a truck ran him over on Khulna-Jashore road in front of Damodor Government Primary School in Phultala upazila on Tuesday. The deceased was identified as Kishore Kumar Paul, 55, an assistant professor of Botany department of the college and resident of Gilatala village in Rampal upazila of Bagerhat. Monirul Islam, officer-in-charge of Phultala Police Station, said the Jahore-bound truck knocked down the teacher around 3:30pm him while crossing road, leaving him dead on the spot. Kishore, who was living at Tank Road in the city, met the tragic end of his life while going to Phultala for visiting his relative's house.
