Our Correspondent NARSINGDI, Dec 6: Cultivation of Bean is gaining ground in the District successful yield of bean brings substantial amount of money to the farmers. Farmers are expecting to produce 20,000 tones bean in the district this year. A large number of farmers of the district have involved them selves in bean cultivation in the recant years considering its economic aspect. Farmers usually cultivate bean on abandoned lands and on the premises of their houses. Many farmers are used to cultivate bean on commercial basis. According to Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers of the district have cultivated over 2600 hectares this season. Last year they cultivated 2550 hectares in the district. Recently News Today correspondent visited different areas of Shibpur, Belabo, Raipura and polash upazilas, the main bean cultivation areas of the district and saw farmers are busy plucking bean from the fields with enthusiasm. Abdur Rahman a farmers of Adiabad village in Raipura upazila said five to six mounds of bean might be plucked from one bigha of land in a week. During the whole season bean may be plucked 80 to 90 times from a land. Most of the farmers termed bean is a profitable vegetable. Excessive rain and flood are the main enemies of the vegetables. According to bean farmers four to five thousand taka is needed to cultivate bean on one bigha of land. Sowing of bean seeds begins from Bangla month of Ahsar, and continuing up to Badra. At the beginning of the season from Kartik month, bean is sold exorbitant prices. Gradually the prices come down with adequate supply. Measures should be taken to combat the virus disease which causes substantial damage to this cash vegetable, some farmers said.
