EC out to hold again a lopsided poll: BNP

News Desk BNP on Thursday night alleged that the Election Commission had announced the next election schedule to hold another unilateral polls as per the government will. In an instant reaction at BNP chairperson's Gulshan office, BNP secretary-general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also said people will not accept any election which is against their hope and aspiration. "The election schedule was announced to hold a lopsided election which has reflected the government will," he said. Fakhrul came up with the remarks at a press conference after meeting of the BNP-led 20-party alliance. Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda announced the election schedule in a televised address to the nation on Thursday evening that the 11th parliamentary elections will be held on December 23. He announced that the last date for submitting nomination papers is November 19 while the date for scrutinising nomination papers is November 22 and the last date for the withdrawal of nomination papers is November 29. A few days ago, the opposition alliance Jatiya Oikya Front (JOF) requested the Election Comm-ission not to announce the polls schedule until the dialogues between the ruling and opposition parties are over. Dr Kamal Hossain, a top leader of the JOF, made the call in a letter to the chief election commissioner, a day before the EC is scheduled to hold a meeting to finalise the polls schedule. The letter also expressed the Oikya Front's readiness to hold further talks with the government, asking the EC to wait until such time. (Inputs taken from UNB)
