Engineer among eight killed in road crashes

News Desk At least eight people, including a senior government engineer, were killed in fatal road accidents in four districts Thursday, in a latest spurt in transport troubles. Police and locals said a number of others were also injured in the crashes in Dinajpur, Barisal, Faridpur and Rajbari districts. Additional Chief Engineer for Rangpur Zone of the Local Government and Engineering Department (LGED) Engineer Afzalur Rahman was killed in an accident at Chirirbandar upazila of Dinajpur district on his way to a government function. The sources said a jeep carrying Engineer Rahman, 59, from Rangpur to Dinajpur crashed into a roadside tree at Uchitpur point on the Rangpur-Dinajpur highway at 9:15am. "Engineer Rahman died on the spot and driver of the jeep Mohammad Hafiz was seriously injured in the accident," Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Chirirbandar Thana Md Haresul Islam said. On information, police rushed in, recovered the body, rescued the injured driver and sent him to Dinajpur Abdur Rahim Medical College Hospital. Engineer Rahman was going to Dinajpur to attend the videoconferencing of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina scheduled to be held in the Deputy Commissioner's conference room at 10 am in Dinajpur district town when tragedy struck him down. In Barisal, three passengers were killed and 10 injured as a bus rammed into a roadside tree on Dhaka-Barisal highway at Baichkhola in Gouronadi upazila in the afternoon. One of the deceased was identified as Laton Rari, 42, a resident of Bamrail area of Ujirpur upazila. Sheikh Atiar Rahman, officer-in-charge of Gouronadi highway police station, said the accident took place around 2pm when the driver of 'BMF Paribahan' bus lost control over the steering, leaving three passengers dead on the spot and around 10 others injured. Being rescued, the injured were admitted to a local hospital. In Faridpur, two people were killed and nine injured when a truck rammed a human hauler on Dhaka-Khulna highway in Sadar upazila. The deceased were identified as Sujon Patwari, 22, a construction worker and son of Manirul Islam of Kanaipur, and Azizul Islam, 45, headmaster of Raikali Hazi Badshah Mia Government Primary School in Kanaipur. Sub-inspector Nizamul Islam of Karimpur highway police camp said the accident took place around 9:45 am when a Magura-bound truck from Faridpur hit a human hauler after a tyre of the truck burst with a big bang, leaving one dead on the spot and injuring ten others. In Rajbari, two people were killed when a private car carrying them plunged into a roadside ditch at Shyamsundar in Kalukhali upazila early in the day. The deceased were identified as driver of the car Manir Hossain, 32, of Manikganj district, and Ripon Quadir, 30, of Mirzapur upazila in Tangail district. SM Abu Farhad, officer-in-charge of Kalukhali Police Station, said, "A Khalukhai-bound car plunged into a roadside ditch at 1:30am as its driver lost control over the steering, leaving both the driver and the passenger dead on the spot."
