Deal inked to purchase 70 locomotives from S Korea

News Report Bangladesh Railway on Wednesday signed an agreement with Korean Hyundai Rotem for procuring 70 meter gauge locomotives. Project Director Abdul Matin Chowdhury and Director of Global Rail Hyundai Rotem Kwang-Kwun Yoon signed the deal on behalf of their respective sides at Railway Bhaban, says a press release. Railways Minister M Mazibul Hoque was present at the signing ceremony as the chief guest. The minister in his speech said the government has undertaken various projects to procure engines to make the railway modern mode of transportation. Terming the deal an important one the minister said Bangladesh is now facing engine crisis as the lifespan of 71 per cent engines has been expired. “This is an important agreement for Bangladesh Railway as the railway will be able to operate more trains on different routes across the country and earn additional revenue after the procurement of the locomotives,” he said. President and Chief Executive Officer of the company Seung Tack Kim, Railways Secretary M Mofazzal Hossain, Director General of Bangladesh Railway M Kazi Rafiqul Alam and officials concerned were present.
