Aspirants busy consolidating position in Narsingdi seats

Md. Abu Taher NARSINGDI, Oct 10: With the eleventh Jatiya Sangsad elections drawing nearer, aspirant candidates have started campaign in their respective constituencies to woo voters. Besides, they are lobbying vigorously to confirm candidature from their respective parties. On August 28 Election Commission Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed announced that the 11th national elections will be held in the last week of December this year. The district (six upazilas) comprises five constituencies: Narsingdi Sadar, Polash, Shibpur, Belabo-Monohardi and Raipura. Narsingdi-1 comprises two pourashavas and 11 unions of Sadar upazila with a total of 366,188 votes. In 2008 Awami League candidate Lt Col (Retd) Nazrul Islam Hiro (Birpratik) was elected MP, defeating former BNP MP Khairul Kabir Khokan. After being elected in 2014 Nazrul Islam became State Minister for Water Resources and was also elected president of the district Awami League. During the period, he worked for development in his constituency. Nazrul Islam says he is almost certain to get party nomination for the coming election. Former student leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, Advisor of Florida, USA Awami League Ayub Khan Montu also begged AL ticket in this seat. Khairul Kabir Khokan, Joint Secretary of the BNP central committee, president of district BNP, former GS, Dhaka University Chhatra Sangsad Union (DUCSU) and former MP (by election, after the death of four-time BNP. MP Shamsu Uddin Ahmed Eshak) is almost certain to get the party nomination. Khokan is a popular leader in his constituency. He has good relations with the local people. Vice President of district BNP and two-time popular Chairman of Narsingdi Sadar Upazila Parishad Monjur Elahi and former MP Shamsuddin Ahmed’s elder son, Harun-Ur Rashid, also hoping for party nomination. Shafiqul Islam, president of district Jatiya Party (Ershad), is also ready for contesting this seat. Narsingdi-2 comprises one pourashava, four unions of Polash upazila and three unions of Sadar upazila abounds with a total of 226,600 votes. In 2008, Awami League candidate Anwarul Ashraf Khan Dilip defeated BNP leader Abdul Moin Khan by huge number of votes. In 2014, election Dr Delip lost party nomination in this seat where Zahidul Kabir leader of Jatiya Somajtantrik Dal belonging to 14-party got nomination. But Kamrul Ashraf Khan Potan younger brother of Dr Dilip being independent candidate defeated 14-party nominated Zahadul Kabir. Dr. Anwarul Ashraf Khan Dilip is now ready for party nomination from Awami League in the upcoming general election as his younger brother, present MP Kamrul Ashraf Khan Potan supporting his elder brother. On the other hand, the elder son of former MP Ahmedul Kabir (Monu Miah), the Editor of Daily Sangbad Althamas Kabir (Mishu), Organizing Secretary of Bangladesh Jubo League, Fazlul Haque Atik also hope to get party nomination from Awami League. BNP leader and former minister Abdul Moin Khan is almost certain to get party nomination for election this seat. JSD leader Zahidul Kabir is also ready for contesting this seat from 14 parties. Azam Khan, presidium member of Jatiya Party (Ershad) is also ready for contesting this seat. Narsingdi-3 comprises one pourashava and eight unions of Shibpur upazila with a total of 218,601 votes. In 2008, AL-nominated candidate Johirul Hoque Mohan defeated the then general secretary of BNP central committee (Sangsker Panthi) Abdul Mannan Bhuiyan as independent candidate and also the BNP nominated candidate general secretary of Narsingdi district BNP Tofazzal Hossain Master. In 2014, Bangladesh Awami Jubo League presidium member Al-Haj Shirajul Islam Mollah as an independent candidate defeated the Awami League candidate former MP Johirul Hoque Mohan. In the coming Sangsad election MP Shirajul Islam Mollah, former MP Johirul Hoque Mohan and President of Shibpur upazila Awami League Harun-or- Rashid are vying for Awami League nomination from this seat. On the other hand, Mass Education Affairs Secretary of BNP central committee and pleader of Khalada Zia Advocate Sanaullah Miah, General Secretary of district BNP Tofazzal Hossain Master, Vice-president of district BNP Monjur Elahi and general secretary of Chhatra Dal central committee Akramul Hassan Minto are lobbying for getting nomination from this seat. Member of Jatiya Party central committee and Senior Vice-president of District Jatiya Party Advocate Rejawl Kabir Based are ready for contesting this seat. Narsingdi-4 comprises of Monohardi and Belabo upazilas (one pourashava and 19 unions) with a total of 332,894 votes. In this seat present MP (uncontested) and his younger brother member of the district Awami League and former president of Dhaka Club Khairul Mojid Mohammud Chandan, member of the executive committee Bangladesh Awami League Nural Mojid Mohammud Humayun, leader of the Awami central committee Dr. Abdur Rouf Sarder, Jubo League central sub-education affairs secretary and former student leader Kazi Mazharul Islam, Chairman of Monohardi upazila Shaiful Islam Khan Biru, teacher of Cambridge University of Australia Dr. Roies Uddin, Lt Colonel (Retd) Abdur Rouf (Bir Bikram) and AL leader Ohidul Hoque Aslam Sani are candidates of Awami League nomination while BNP candidates are former MP Sarder Shakhawat Hossain Bakul, Liberation War Affairs Secretary of BNP Central Committee Lt Colonel (Retd) Joynal Abedin, and general secretary of Bangladesh Jatiyatabadi Sechhasebokdol Abdul Kadir Juwel are lobbying for party ticket. Leader of Jatiya Party central committee Nawaz Ali Bhuiyan are also ready to contest in this seat. It is to be mentioned here that Nawaz Ali Bhuiyan is the only candidate from Belabo upazila for the upcoming parliamentary election. Narsingdi-5 comprises one pourashava and 24 unions of Raipura upazila with a total of 360,122 voters. In this seat former minister and member of Advisory Committee of Bangladesh Awami League, Rajiuddin Ahmed Raju, MP during the last four general elections elected MP defeated BNP nominated candidates. In the coming election he is ready for getting party nomination. But his younger brother Salauddin Ahmed Bachchu recently arranged a large show-down in the area for contesting the upcoming Jatiya Sangsad election. On the other hand, member of the Bangladesh Awami League Central Committee Advocate ABM Reazul Kabir Kawsar, General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami Jubo League Harunor Rashid Harun, Chairman of Raipura Upazila Parishad Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury and organizing secretary of Bangladesh Krishak League central committee Advocate Shumsul Hoque are lobbying for getting party nomination. Former BNP nominated MP Abdul Ali Mridha (1991 election) is absent for a long time from politics. Now he is lobbying for BNP nomination while president of Raipura upazila BNP Advocate Nesar Uddin, leader of central committee BNP Engineer Ashraf Uddin Bokul, former president of Raipura upazila BNP M A Zaman, Joint-Secretary of Dhaka city (south) VP Rejawor Rahman Ripon are ready for nomination from BNP. President of Raipura upazila Jatiya Party Engineer MA Sattar are also ready for contesting from this seat.
