8 killed, 33 injured in road crashes

News Desk At least eight people were killed and 33 others injured in separate road crashes in Khagrachhari, Munshiganj, Manikganj, Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts on Thursday night and Friday In Khagrachhari, a pedestrian was killed and 20 students of Chittagong University were injured as a bus carrying the students overturned on a road in Alutila area of the Sadar upazila on Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Hafiz Ullah, 67, a local fish trader. Fire service sources said that the Khagrachhari-bound tourist bus carrying students overturned on the road after the bus driver lost over the steering, leaving the fish trader dead on the spot and at least 20 students injured. In Munshiganj, a minor girl was crushed to death by a battery-run auto-bike in Mirshwarai area of Sadar upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as Shahina Akhter, 5, son of Idris Ali. Alamgir Hossain, officer-in-charge of Sadar Police Station, said the auto-bike hit Shahina at noon while she was crossing road on her way home after taking bath in the Dhaleshwari River, leaving her critically injured. Later, she was taken to Munshiganj General Hospital where doctors referred her to Dhaka. However, she died on the way to Dhaka. In Manikganj, a teenage girl was killed and three others were injured as a jeep plunged into a roadside ditch at Mushuria in Shibalaya upazila on Friday. The deceased was identified as Asiya Khatun, 13, daughter of Motaleb Mia of Terokhada upazila of Khulna district. Yeamin Uddoula, in-charge of Borongail Highway police camp, said the accident took place in the area around 7:30 am when a tyre of a Patuaria-bound jeep got punctured and it fell into a roadside ditch, leaving the girl dead and three others injured. The injured were taken to Manikganj Sadar Hospital. Meanwhile, five people were killed and 10 others injured in two separate road accidents in Lalmonirhat and Gaibandha districts Thursday night and Friday morning. Police and hospital sources said three persons were killed on the spot when a speedy truck hit a rickshaw in front of the BGB Canteen on the Lalmonirhat-Burimari highway in Lalmonirhat district town at 9:30 pm on Thursday. "The deceased were identified as rickshaw driver Dulal Mian, 30, of Khatapara area in Lalmonirhat town, Jahangir Alam, 40, and Motaleb Hossain, 40, of Patgram municipality in Lalmonirhat district," officer-in-charge (OC) of Lalmonirhat Sadar Thana Mahfuz Alam told Friday. In Gaibandha, two people were killed and 10 others injured when a passenger bus overturned while overtaking a truck at RV Cold Storage point on the Rangpur-Dhaka highway under Sadullapur upazila Friday morning. "The deceased were identified as driver of the passenger bus Saiful Mian, 40, of Panchagarh and its passenger Chandni Akhter, 10, daughter of Sarforaz of Mirpur-11 area in Dhaka city," said OC of Gobindaganj Highway Police Thana Akhteruzzaman. Being informed, police, fire service and civil defense personnel rushed to the spot, rescued the injured bus passengers and sent them to nearby Pirganj and Polashbari Upazila Health Complexes, Akhteruzzaman added. Police recovered bodies of the deceased persons and seized the ill-fated passenger bus. Two separate cases were filed in these connections with the respective police stations.
