EC announces Barisal, Rajshahi, Sylhet city poll schedule

News Desk Voting in the elections for Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal city corporations will be held on July 30 in what is seen as the last litmus test for the new Election Commission ahead of a crucial general election. Prior to the three city polls analogous, election to Gazipur City Corporation is set for June 26 as per a fresh schedule announced by the EC earlier. The GCC election was previously scheduled to have been held on the same date Khulna city vote took place but was deferred following a last-minute writ petition. Elections to the three cities and Khulna city were last held on June 15, 2013. Mayors in these four and in Gazipur were all elected from BNP. However, the Khulna seat was taken by the ruling Awam League in the May 15 election. As per the schedule officially announced formally Wednesday, the deadline for the submission of nomination papers is June 28, while the dates for scrutinising those are July 1 and July 2. The last date for withdrawal of candidature is July 9. Earlier on May 29, the Commission at a meeting had decided to hold the elections to the three city corporations on July 30. Meanwhile, EC's regional election officers for Rajshahi, Sylhet and Barisal have been appointed returning officers for the city corporations respectively. Both the major parties have attached high importance to the city elections, being held politically with party symbols for the candidates, as they are taking the polls as a sort of popularity check before the national elections due by the yearend.
