One killed during anti-drug RAB drive in Rajshahi

A suspected drug peddler has been killed in what the Rapid Action Battalion or RAB described as a shootout in Rajshahi, reports bdnews24.com. The shootout took place in Purba Naboganga area in Kashiadanga Upazila around 12:30am on Thursday, said Major SM Ashraful Islam, deputy commander of RAB-5. The man has been identified as 45-year-old Hasan Ghatial, a resident of Sonaikandi area under the Karnahar police station. A RAB-patrol team conducted an operation in Naboganga to seize a cache of promethazine-based drug, Phensedyl, brought from India. During the raid, the contraband drug smugglers opened fire on RAB forcing them to retaliate. Hasan was found with bullet wounds while the others fled, according to the police. He was rushed to the Rajshahi Medical College Hospital where the doctors declared him dead, Ashraful said. A shotgun, three rounds of ammunition and 147 bottles of Phensedyl were recovered from the scene.
