Salina becomes self-reliant by poultry, agri farming

Our Correspondent NARSINGDI, May 17: Salina Jahan, a woman farmer and entrepreneur of the district, who set an example by establishing a healthy and organic agriculture through using organic fertilizers. Salina Jahan received National Award medal Bangabandhu Jatiya Agricultural award from Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in 2007. She also received the 9th Edition of Islamic Development Bank (IDB) prize for women's contribution to food security and development. She received the prize consists of cash award US Dollar 25000 and a crest from the king of Saudi Arabia Ibrahim-Al-Abdul Aziz in a ceremony held on the occasion of 39th annual meeting of IDB Board of governments recently. Last year Salina also received award joyeeta (Economics category) from District Administration, Narsingdi. News Today Correspondent recently visited Salina's organic agriculture farm at Shoikarchar village of Joshore union under Shibpur Upazila. Talking to News Today Salina Jahan said, she and her organization Grameen Krishak Darida Bimochan Atmakalyan Sangstha started organic agriculture from 2007. She brought out the unemployed rural women from home to lands and engaged them in producing Vermin compost for organic vegetables. Salina said at present she cultivated organic vegetables on 20 bigas land and getting excellent income from agriculture. Salina Jahan said side by side agriculture during the last five years she also engaged her in poultry farming and Turkey bird farming at Gilabar area of Joynagor union of the same upazila of Narsingdi district. She appointed a number of woman in her poultry and turkey bird farm and providing them practical knowledge about rearing, feeding and medicine of poultry birds. She also inspired the women rearing poultry and turkey bird for accelerating growth of the prospective sector to strengthen national economy. She said she started poultry farming from 2013 and Turkey bird farming from 2015. There are over 5000 layer poultry and 5000 boiler poultry in her poultry farm and 700 Turkey bird are in Turkey bird farm. Salina said poultry rearing and turkey bird rearing is more profitable if a farmer getting help from local Livestock Department. Salina Jahan said, women's participation in agriculture and poultry sector has been contributing in poverty alleviation, meeting nutrition demand of the population and also bringing self-reliance to the women, said Salina Jahan.
