Defence continues arguments

The defence Monday continued placing arguments in the August 21, 2004 grenade attack case, reports BSS. Judge Shahed Nur Uddin of Dhaka Speedy Trial Tribunal-1 set up near old Dhaka Central Jail at Nazimuddin Road here adjourned the hearing till tomorrow upon completion of the arguments for the 43rd days. Defence lawyer Advocate Mizanur Rahman partially submitted his arguments before the court today on behalf of his client Arif Hasan Suman. The court will hear the incomplete arguments of Mizanur today. Counsels of the fugitive accused BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman, Maulana Liton alias Jubair, Mufti Shafiqur Rahman, Md Iqbal, Maulana Tajuddin, Jahangir Alam Badar, Ratul Ahmed Babu, Mohibul Mottakin, owner of Hanif Paribahan Md Hanif, Md Khalil, former BNP lawmaker Shah Mofazzal Hossain Kaikobad, BNP leader Haris Chowdhury, Anisul Mursalin, and Mufti Abdul Hai, concluded placing arguments for their respective clients. Lawyers of the detained accused in the cases, Uzzal alias rattan, Munshi Mohibullah alias Ovi, Abdul Hannan alias Maulana Sabbir, Hafez Maulana Yeahia, Maulana Md Sayed alias Doctor Zafor, also completed arguments. The prosecution on December 27, 2017, concluded its arguments on facts and pleaded for maximum punishment for the accused in the trial. Chief Prosecutor of the case Syed Rezaur Rahman moved for the state. A total of 24 AL leaders and workers including the then Mohila Awami League President and wife of late President Zillur Rahman, Ivy Rahman, were killed and 500 others were injured in the grenade attacks on an Awami League rally at Bangabandhu Avenue on August 21 in 2004.
