Involving Ansar, VDP in development

Ansar and Village Defense Party (VDP) celebrated its 38th founding anniversary in a befitting manner. Marking the day, the auxiliary force held its national assembly amid daylong festivity at Ansar Academy at Shafipur in Gazipur. The force was formed as the "East Pakistan Ansars" by the East Pakistan Ansars Act of 1948, and officially launched on 12 February 1948. President M Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina have greeted members of Ansar and Village Defence Party on the occasion of its founding anniversary. President Abdul Hamid said, since its inception on February 12 in 1948, the Ansar force has been closely related to the country's history, growth and development along with maintaining law and order. The work efficiency and service of this force had made our country's history glorious, he added. A total of 670 members of this force embraced martyrdom in the War of Liberation, he said. In fact, Bangladesh Ansar and VDP are a partner of development and progress. About 61 thousand Ansar members are now engaged in ensuring safety of important installations and overall security. The President appreciated the role of Ansar in ensuring security in public-private institutions and mills-factories and helping police in curbing crimes. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said the Ansar has a glorious history. This force plunged into the Liberation War in 1971 in response to the call of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, she said and recalled that 12 members of Ansar force presented guard of honour to chief of country's provincial government at Meherpur Amrokanon on April 17 in 1971. She recalled with profound respect 670 Ansar members who were martyred in the Liberation War and language martyr Abdul Jabbar, who was an Ansar commander. In fact, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has already directed the members of Ansar and Village Defense Party to play more proactive role against militancy, terrorism and abuse of drug in rural areas. As a global phenomenon, Bangladesh is not free from the spate of militancy, terrorism and drug dealers which has emerged as a grave concern. Ansar and VDP members can play a big role in containing the menaces across the country as they live in rural areas, she said. She expressed her firm optimism that Ansar and VDP members would play a specific role in making people aware about the criminals linked with militancy, terrorism and drug dealing as well as maintaining law and order. Ansar and VDP have even set up specialized bank in 1995 as per Law no. 21 promulgated in the parliament of Bangladesh with a view to ameliorating economic condition of Ansar and VDP members. Around 6 million Ansar-VDP members are the direct beneficiaries of the Bank. The bank has embarked its journey on 10 January, 1996. The main objectives of this bank are to alleviate poverty of marginal Ansar-VDP members in particular, women empowerment and economic well-being by providing banking services to the large number of Ansar-VDP members through 239 Branches and 18 Regional Offices spreading every nook and corner of the country.
