Innovate climate-tolerant crops: President

President Abdul Hamid on Thursday urged agriculture scientists and researchers to come forward to innovate climate-tolerant varieties of crops aiming to face the adverse impacts of climate change in agriculture sector, reports UNB. The President came up with the call when a 10-member delegation of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU), led by its vice chancellor Prof Md Golam Shahi Alam, met him at Bangabhaban on Thursday afternoon. President's Press Secretary Joynal Abedin briefed reporters after the meeting. Observing that Bangladesh is experiencing the adverse impacts of global climate change, Hamid said there is no alternative to innovation of new agricultural technology to ensure sustainable development in the country. He said Bangladesh is an agrarian country and agriculture still plays an important role in the country's economy. During the meeting, SAU vice chancellor Prof Golam Shahi apprised the President of various activities of the university and the different aspects of the first annual report of the university submitted to him (Thursday). He sought cooperation of the President in discharging his duty. Secretaries concerned to the President were present on the occasion.
