Toxic molasses kills two pharmaceutical workers, sickens 8

GODAGARI, Oct 12: Two pharmaceutical workers died and eight others fell sick overnight consuming apparently toxic molasses along with bread provided by the factory management, police and witnesses said, reports BSS. "We were served last night the molasses along with bread as part of our daily meal. we fell sick soon after consuming the food," said one of the workers Team Pharma as he is being treated at Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH) along with nine of his co-workers. Police said the workers were initially sent back to their home but they were rushed to the hospital with deteriorating condition and two of them died early this morning. The factory is situated at BSCIC industrial estate in the city. "We are going to launch investigations to confirm as the cause behind the incidents," Godagari Police Station's officer in charge Hipzur Alam Munshi, told newsmen. Another report adds: A total of 805 persons got allowance cards from social services office at Sadullapur upazila in the district on Thursday under social safety net programme of the government in 2016-2017 fiscal year. The allowance cards were distributed to 354 persons with disability, 351 aged persons, and 100 widows of the upazila to help them passing their days without economical hardship, Upazila Social Service officials said. Each of the persons with disability will get Tk 600 and the widows and aged persons each will receive Tk 500 as grant from the government per month, they said. A simple function was held at the auditorium of upazila parishad in the afternoon on the occasion with upazila social services officer Ikbal Hossain in the chair. Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rahima Khatun formally distributed the cards to the selected beneficiaries as the chief guest and general secretary of upazila Awami League Shahriar Khan Biplob was present at the event as the special guest. A good number of upazila level officials, public representatives, political leaders and journalists were also present.
