Rivers in death throes

Landsharks responsible

AB Razzak Landsharks are continuing to grab rivers and waterbodies throughout the country without any hindrance. The authorities have miserably failed to resist their anti-environmental activities. In the cities or in the villages existence of the rivers and the waterbodies is threatened by the onslaught of the landsharks, causing damage to the flora and fauna of the country. The encroachers are building high-rises and markets by grabbing the rivers with the help of a section of dishonest government officials and influential quarters. The rivers and other waterbodies in Dhaka, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Munshiganj, Tangail, Manikganj, Jessore, Kushtia and Sylhet and other districts of the country are on the death throes as most part of these rivers are encroached. The canals along the roads and highways are also grabbed by influential encroachers. Embankments, roads, culverts and buildings were set up on these canals. Such setups create waterlogging after a shower and cause problem to vehicular and pedestrians’ movement. The long canal along the Dhaka-Manikganj-Singair road was grabbed by an influential quarters. Hundreds of houses and industries were set up encroaching the canal. A branch of the Dhaleshwari river that flows by the Singair poura market is now on the death throes as a part of it has been grabbed by an influential person of the locality and a big market has been set up there by him. Besides without the permission of the government a number of people have set up houses and markets encroaching the west part of the branch river that flows between the Singair Bazar and the Sadar upazila. The branch of the river Dhaleswari will die soon and be wholly grabbed as the administration remains silent even after witnessing such encroachment.
