Steps taken for railway uplift: Minister

RAJSHAHI, April 20: Railway Minister Mujibul Haque said here on Thursday the present government has adopted epoch-making steps for development of the railway sector, reports BSS. He said the railway sector will witness a tremendous development upon completion of the programmes undertaken by the government. The minister was inaugurating introduction of new coaches to the intercity 'Kobotak Express Train' on Rajshahi-Khulna-Rajshahi route at Rajshahi railway station here on Thursday as chief guest. Former Mayor of Rajshahi City Corporation AHM Khairuzzaman Liton, Abdul Wadud, MP, Chairman of Rajshahi Zila Parishad Muhammad Ali Sarker and Director General of Bangladesh Railway Amzad Hossain also spoke on the occasion. Mojibul Haque said a number of closed railway routes were restarted and the rest will be launched in phases. Besides, gates of 650 level crossings were improved and the process for appointing 1800 gate-keepers is progressing fast. He said another parallel bridge will be constructed on Jamuna River beside the Bangabandhu Multipurpose Bridge to further improve the railway communication in northwestern region. The minister said the present government led by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is working relentlessly for the development of rail services. All the railways of the country would have to be turned into Duel Gauge gradually, he added. Mujibul Haque said the previous BNP-Jamaat government did nothing for the development of the railway department during its tenure.
