Walton opens computer manufacturing plant

News Report Walton group, country’s leading electrical, electronics and home appliances manufacturing and marketing company, has emerged as the country’s first computer manufacturing workhouse by opening an ultramodern computer factory at its Digi-Tech Industries at Chandra in Gazipur. Alongside, it added Bangladesh to the list of computer manufacturing countries after smartphone. It also ushered a new history for the country’s IT manufacturing sector. Mustafa Jabbar, post, telecommunication and information technology minister and Junaid Ahmed Palak, state minister for information and communication technology, inaugurated the factory on Thursday. “Bangladesh is no more a import oriented country rather we are on way to emerge as manufacturer of ICT devices,” Mustafa Jabbar said while expressing his reaction at the inaugural ceremony of Walton Computer Production Plant. Informing that two-layer motherboards are being manufactured at Walton Computer Plant, he said, the local brand has planned to manufacture most of the parts of a computer including multi-layer motherboards, RAM, SSD devices. The minister termed the Walton’s such initiative as: “That’s a fantastic thing.” SM Nurul Alam Rezvi, vice chairman of Walton Group, welcomed the minister and the state minister when they reached Walton Digi-Tech Industries. SM Shamsul Alam, chairman of Walton Hi-Tech Industries Limited, SM Ashraful Alam, managing director, SM Rezaul Alam, chairman of Walton Digi-Tech Industries Ltd and SM Monjurul Alam, managing director among others were present in the opening ceremony. The Walton Digital Devices Production Plant possesses all facilities, which are in the government’s Hi-Tech Park. They will get all facilities of Hi-Tech Park if they apply for those, he added. Terming the computer production plant of Walton as a courageous initiative, State Minister for Information and Communication Technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, who was also present in the inauguration ceremony, came up with the assurance of the government assistance for hardware sector of the country. ‘The government will assist Walton buying technology devices manufactured here,’ he said. We have visited various production lines of Walton Computer Plant and were astonished to see such state of the art production and assembling lines which we did not think of. Walton has done impossible things possible, he added. After the launching of the Walton Computer Manufacturing Plant, the minister and the state minister along with other guests visited various production units. Sources said, latest machineries from Japan and German technology have been set up at Walton Digi-Tech industries Ltd. with separate departments for computer and laptop designing, research and development, quality control and testing lab. Laptops powered by Intel’s latest generation processors along with various models of desktop and monitors of affordable prices will be manufactured at the the newly opened Computer Plant of Walton. Walton, at initial stage, targeted monthly production of 60,000 unit laptops, 30,000 desktops and more 30,000 unit monitors. The local brand eyes to expand its production capacity and will go for manufacturing of other computer accessories including pen drive, keyboard and mouse. Production of high quality PCBA or motherboards has begun already using Printed Circuit Board through Surface Mounting Technology. Stocks of necessary raw materials have been piled up while the Plant created nearly 1000 employments.
